What is The Perfexion™ Gamma Knife?
The equipment is a way to integrate modern imaging of the brain (CT, MRI, PET, angiogram) with precise delivery of radiation generated by multiple sources of Cobalt. The system was designed for use in the brain and allows delivery of controlled doses to defined targets with a goal to minimize radiation to adjacent normal tissues
How is the Treatment Given?
A typical treatment is an outpatient procedure. A frame is placed on the patient using local anesthesia. Images (CT/MR/angiogram) are obtained and the Gamma Plan software is used by the team of neurosurgeon, oncologist and physicist to plan delivery of the radiation. Applying the frame requires injection of local anesthesia, but the treatment itself is painless and the patient does not require anesthesia. Typical treatment times vary from as little as 15 minutes to a few hours depending on target size and dose. Patients can go home the same day.
Are there risks of Gamma Knife Treatments?
Yes. While significant complications occur only rarely, some patients can have complications from the treatment. Typically complications do not occur immediately, but are delayed several months after treatment. Complications include headache, numbness, weakness, speech difficulty, seizures. While these problems often recede with time, some patients do experience lasting, permanent problems. A full discussion with the patient before the procedure is important to be sure the risks are well understood.
Does Medical Insurance Cover Gamma Knife Treatments?
Yes. Gamma knife treatments are performed around the world and recognized indications are reimbursed by insurance and MediCare.
