California Gamma Knife
The Gamma Knife has been used for over 50 years to treat brain tumors and vascular malformations of the brain. In addition, in the past 27 years the Gamma Knife has also been used to treat Essential Tremor and Trigeminal Neuralgia. Over 1000 procedures have been performed at our center since 2006.
California Gamma Knife
Dr. Ronald Young started working with one of the first Gamma Knife units installed in the United States in 1991, and has been continuously active in clinical care and research into the treatment of pain, movement disorders, tumors and blood vessel malformations. Dr. Les Cahan, a long-time colleague of Dr. Young, has had a long interest in epilepsy and novel treatments for vascular disorders of the brain.
An important part of a successful Gamma Knife Center is the close collaboration among neurosurgeons, radiation oncologists, and radiation physicists. Dr. Young and Dr. Cahan work closely with experienced radiation oncologists including Dr. Robert Hesselgesser and radiation physicists including Jesse Lee at the Los Robles Neuroscience Gamma Knife center. This group has used the Gamma Knife for several years to treat tremor, trigeminal neuralgia, malignant and benign brain tumors, and vascular malformations of the brain—over 1,650 procedures done since 2006.
News Flash
A report has appeared in the Februrary 2018 issue of the prestigious Journal of Neurosurgery which contains a recommendation of the International Stereotactic Radiosurgery Society (ISRS) for the use of the Gamma Knife to treat tremor (Martinez-Marino, N.D. et al, Stereotactic Radiosurgery for tremor: systematic review International Stereotactic Radiosurgery Society practice guidelines, J. Neurosurg. Publish Before Print, February 23, 2018). The conclusion of the report states “Stereotactic Radiosurgery (i.e. Gamma Knife)…….is a well tolerated and effective treatment for reducing medically refractory tremor and one that is recommended by the International Stereotactic Radiosurgery Society.
The ISRS is the major international society composed of medical professionals from around the world who employ stereotactic radiosurgery. The recommendation is of great significance since for many years the American Academy of Neurology has insisted that Gamma Knife treatment of tremor was “experimental” or “investigational” and therefore dissuaded some neurologists from recommending it for treatment of their patients with tremor. This well researched recommendation by the ISRS should put such ill placed concerns to rest. They have reaffirmed what we have been saying for years, that the Gamma Knife is a safe and effective treatment for tremor. This is good news for all patients who suffer from tremor.

This place and the people are so very kind and caring they took the time to tell and explain the procedure to my Mom in detail. They where very kind to my Dad who is very scared for my Mom they took the time to show him every thing she would be experiencing. We took my Mom home the same day and she has had no side effects from this procedure. I would recommend this for everyone that has a brain tumor.

Recently had Gamma Knife Surgery for an acoustic neuroma. The entire staff, from the doctors, nurses and office personnel, were highly competent and supportive. If you require this procedure, I can't imagine there is a better facility to have it done.
